A critical transportation link in the NJ / NYC transportation system failed today. Part of the Eastbound section of the Newark Bay Extension Bridge of the New Jersey Turnpike deck (roadway) dropped over 3 inches today as the section fell off the expansion support pucks under the span. The section between exit 14 and 14A on the NJ Turnpike was closed while engineers and construction contractors work to resolve the issue.
This is just the latest in a string of bridges and overpasses around the USA that have failed, collapsed, or been found unsafe. See the article in the Analysis Section.
